Frequently Asked Questions

Generally, standard Medicare plans don’t cover prescription GLP-1 drugs for weight loss. However, you can get coverage for certain GLP-1 medications through Medicare’s GLP-1 Bridge if you qualify.

This temporary program is managed directly by Medicare’s central processor, not independent Medicare plans, like Essence Healthcare, but you can still access this weight-loss coverage as an Essence member if you qualify. You may also qualify for a GLP-1 with Essence if it’s needed for another reason, such as diabetes or heart health. In that case, your coverage would be managed by Essence and would not be part of the Bridge program.

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is a temporary federal program designed to help cover specific prescription weight-loss drugs. Starting July 1, 2026, this program provides an opportunity for eligible Medicare Part D beneficiaries to access certain GLP-1 medications for a $50 copay for a 28- or 30-day fill, while permanent coverage rules are finalized.

To qualify for the GLP-1 Bridge, you must be at least 18 years old and enrolled in a Part D plan, which includes stand-alone Part D plans and Medicare plans that provide Part D prescription drug coverage. Whether or not you qualify is also based on your body mass index (BMI) and if you have certain related health conditions. You’ll qualify for weight-loss GLP-1 drug coverage through the Bridge program if you meet any of these health guidelines:

Body Mass Index (BMI)Required Health Conditions
BMI of 35 or higherNo related health conditions required
BMI of 30 or higherMust have at least one: heart failure, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or kidney disease (stage 3a or above)
BMI of 27 or higherMust have at least one: prediabetes, previous heart disease or heart attack, previous stroke, or symptomatic peripheral artery disease

Wondering what your BMI is? Try the Center for Disease Control’s Adult BMI Calculator. This tool will give you a good idea about your BMI. If you’re interested in taking a GLP-1 for weight loss, talk with your doctor. They can help review qualifications and discuss which medication would be the best fit for you.

Medicare’s GLP-1 Bridge covers three specific FDA-approved GLP-1 medications for weight loss:

  • Wegovy® (available as an injection or oral tablets)
  • Zepbound® (available as a KwikPen® only)
  • Foundayo™ (available as oral tablets)

If you qualify for the GLP-1 Bridge program, you’ll pay a $50 copay for a 28- or 30-day fill of your covered medication.

It’s important to know that this $50 copay doesn’t count toward your annual medical or Part D out-of-pocket maximums or deductibles. It’s a separate, fixed cost set directly by Medicare’s central processor.

The first step to getting started with the GLP-1 Bridge program is to talk to your doctor. They can help review qualifications and handle the prescription and approval process.

The GLP-1 Bridge is a temporary Medicare program active from July 1, 2026 to December 31, 2027. It gives eligible Medicare Part D beneficiaries immediate coverage for select weight-loss drugs. This program acts as a bridge while Medicare finalizes permanent coverage rules.

Essence members: If you currently use a GLP-1 for diabetes, heart health, or sleep apnea covered under your Part D benefit with Essence, we will continue to cover that medication exactly as outlined in your Prescription Drug Formulary. The GLP-1 Bridge program is managed directly by Medicare's central processor, not Essence Healthcare.

If you’re currently with another insurance company, please contact them directly, as other Medicare plans may have different coverage rules.

  • Your best resource is your doctor. They will be able to determine if you qualify for weight-loss medications like Wegovy®, Zepbound®, or Foundayo™. Your doctor is also who will prescribe the medication and submit any approval requests if needed.
