If you’re looking for information about Medicare coverage because of a disability a good place to start is eligibility. You’re eligible for Medicare before you turn 65, if you:

  • Get Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) benefits for a disability.
  • Have ALS (or Lou Gehrig’s disease) or End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

Medicare Part A

  • Coverage is automatic after getting disability benefits for 24 months.
  • There’s no waiting period if you have ALS. You can receive Part A the first month you begin receiving Social Security or RRB.
  • In most ESRD cases, Part A coverage begins the first day of the fourth month of your dialysis treatment.

Medicare Part B

If any of the above categories fit your situation, you may also qualify for Part B. Contact your local Social Security office to ask questions and get the necessary forms.
