As a caregiver or someone helping a friend or family member enroll in a Medicare plan, it’s important to consider the following before making this important decision.
There are several times during the year when beneficiaries can enroll in Medicare. Discuss which one fits their situation.
Original Medicare includes Parts A and B and covers hospital and medical insurance. Part D is prescription drug coverage. Part C (Medicare Advantage) includes Parts A and B and usually D plus extras like dental, vision, hearing and more. Med Supp insurance plans help with the costs not covered by Original Medicare. Review these options together including the benefits, services and costs to determine the best fit. For additional information check out the FAQs.
There are monthly and yearly costs such as premiums, deductibles, copays and coinsurance. Explore if your loved one is eligible for any assistance programs to help pay for costs related to Medicare. It can be helpful to make a list of health-related expenses from the past year and discuss budget. This information can be a good starting point of conversation about the maximum amount your loved one can spend in a year.
If keeping current doctors is important, review the provider directory that’s available from the health plans you’re considering. You can also contact the doctor’s office to inquire if they accept Medicare or a specific plan.
Make a list of current medications and compare it to the plan formulary to ensure they’re all covered. It’s also helpful to check availability of pharmacies.
Lifestyle could have an impact on the best option for your loved one. If they travel often, they’ll want coverage for things like emergencies out of the country or prescriptions outside their home state.
If dental, vision, hearing and other extra benefits are essential, consider plans that offer all these benefits, like Medicare Advantage plans.
If you’re making decisions for a loved one, you’ll want to ensure you have all the necessary legal documents. Contact a legal advisor or the Social Security office to find out the type of information you’ll need to help your loved one enroll.
